Why can't non-catholics receive Holy Communion at Mass?

Holy Communion for Catholics is a sign of unity in belief and practice. Non-Catholics don’t have the same beliefs and practices as Catholics and so we are not united. As a result, Catholics are not able to share Holy Communion with most non-Catholics. However, in some situations, Orthodox Christians can receive Communion at Mass.

‍

Non-Catholics are very welcome to attend Mass and take part in other ways, and to receive a blessing during Communion – they are still part of our community.

‍

There are other ways to show unity, such as in care for the poor and for the environment; ecumenical projects and discussions (between different types of Christians); inter-faith work and dialogue and many others.

Material produced in collaboration with the Agency for Evangelisation in the Diocese of Westminster.
